I saw a rather wonderful sci-fi film in Amsterdam today, Sunshine, by the director of Trainspotting and a host of other British flicks.
It’s reminiscent of Kubrick’s 2001 but presents a story of Earth’s potential destruction in the far-distant future due to the dying of the sun. A space crew must find a way to re-energise our primary energy source and save life as we know it. It’s a beautiful looking film, strikingly designed and conceived. But it’s also a timely reminder that humans are capable of solving even the most difficult of environmental tasks (when things get desperate enough, of course.) New Scientist has already examined the film’s scientific credentials.
If nothing else, Sunshine is a reminder that science fiction can still both dazzle and stimulate.
