I’m excited to announce the release of my new book, Pills, Powder and Smoke: Inside the Bloody War on Drugs. It’s now out in Australia (via Scribe publications), India later in the year (with Pan Macmillan India and a special foreword for this edition), November in the US and January in the UK.
It’s a 4+ year investigation around the world from Honduras to Guinea-Bissau, the Philippines to the US and Australia to the UK on what the brutal yet futile drug war looks like today and how it could all end (by regulating and legalising all drugs). It’s a compelling and addictive book. The full blurb, endorsements and other details are here.
The book is endorsed by leading UK drug expert Dr David Nutt, acclaimed writer Christos Tsiolkas and best-selling author Johann Hari. Eg. here’s Hari’s comment:
“Antony Loewenstein is an amazing journalist and this is an amazing book. Anyone who cares about the war on drugs – one of the biggest catastrophes in the world – should read this superb book right away.”
The drug war is inarguably the most deadly war of the last 50 years. It’s time to end it.
I’ll be in Australia for a 2-week book tour from early September, 9 events in 4 cities, and all details are here and here. There will be heaps of forthcoming media coverage and other book tours in different countries are being planned.
Please share the news of the book via social media and with friends and family. Please buy one (or 10 copies!) if you can from your local bookstore or online. Independent journalism needs your support
One of my aims is to give voice to the largely invisible civilians who are caught up in a war on drugs over which they have no control. They deserve better and a sustainable peace.
