Iran is evil, according to the US. Iran must be contained, says George W. Bush. Iran’s leadership must be overthrown, demand the neo-cons.
Then, of course, reality sets in:
“In a new indication that the balance of power within the administration of President George W. Bush has tilted strongly in favour of the realists, Washington’s influential ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, has disclosed that Bush has authorised him to open direct talks with Iran about stabilising Iraq.”
Such a move indicates that Iran is heavily active in Iraq and that the US is fearful of Iran’s growing influence. The interview with Khalilzad was in Newsweek, but has received little coverage in Australia.
Iran is one of the major beneficiaries of the Iraq invasion. So much for US brains and grunt.
