A letter in today’s Melbourne Age:
I smell a rat
“Oh, how convenient for John Howard’s push for draconian legislation. A real terrorist threat. Maybe. But not sufficient a threat to warn anyone or raise the nation’s security status — just enough of a threat to rush through legislation, the day after the horse race that delayed it. I can’t see a burning Reichstag, but I can sure smell a rat. Is there no one who can explain to Lance Corporal Beazley that hard cases make bad law?”
David Langsam, Flemington Hill
At least one journalist is questioning the media’s complicity in the latest terrorist “threat.” And guess what? She doesn’t work for a major news organisation.
