I’m happy to announce that Declassified Australia, the news website that I co-founded in 2021, will be co-sponoring the upcoming Belmarsh Tribunal at Sydney University on 4 March. It’s the latest in a long tradition of similar events around the world, aiming to hold the powerful to account. In this case, it’s about highlighting the…
Wikileaks
Wikileaks is one of the biggest and most important stories in the world, challenging governments and journalists alike. I’ve been writing extensively about the group since 2006, featured an exclusive interview in 2008 with founder Julian Assange and examined the myriad of issues around the website. Assange himself asked me in the early days whether I wanted to be on the group’s board to vet incoming leaks and determine their veracity before publishing. I agreed but unfortunately this never eventuated.
TNT Radio interview on Wikileaks, press bravery and conflict
David McBride is an Australian hero, a former military lawyer turned whistle-blower who exposed war crimes in Afghanistan. He appears weekly on TNT Radio and interviewed me last weekend about journalism, war, ethics, Wikileaks and accountability:
Speaking in support of freeing Julian Assange and Wikileaks
On 10 December, I spoke outside the Sydney office of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in support of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The other speakers included whistle-blower David McBride and Greens Senator David Shoebridge. The video was filmed by Cathy Vogan of Consortium News.
The rise of Declassified Australia
Declassified Australia was launched nearly one year ago by journalist Peter Cronau and me. We’ve published more than 20 stories since on a range of issues including spying, social media manipulation, Afghan refugees and Australia’s foreign policy. We have big plans for ramping up the reach and scale of the outlet so stay tuned. This…

The ongoing torture of Julian Assange
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is one step closer to being released after a UK judge found that he couldn’t be extradited to the US. Maybe. There’s still a long road ahead: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Antony Loewenstein (@antloewenstein)
Talking Wikileaks, war crimes and state capitulation
The great new book, A Secret Australia: Revealed by the WikiLeaks Exposés, edited by Felicity Ruby and Peter Cronau, is a timely look at the legacy of Wikileaks. I have a chapter in it. Last week I was interviewed on the popular ABC Radio program, Late Night Live with Philip Adams:
A Secret Australia: Revealed by the Wikileaks Exposes book launch
Wikileaks is one of the most important news organisations in the last 20 years. I’ve been a supporter since its birth in 2006. A new book is just out, A Secret Australia: Revealed by the WikiLeaks Exposés, edited by Felicity Ruby and Peter Cronau, and I have a chapter in it. Last week I spoke…
Bring Julian Assange home
I’ve been a supporter of Wikileaks since its inception in 2006. It’s been a wild ride, full of challenges and exhilaration. Right now, the life of founder Julian Assange is in danger so I’m happy to have signed a letter, alongside other prominent Australian writers and journalists, asking Australia’s Foreign Minister Marise Payne to take…
