Wikileaks volunteer Jacob Appelbaum: I dread US Customs more than I dreaded walking across the border from Turkey to Iraq in 2005. That’s something worth noting.
Wikileaks
Wikileaks is one of the biggest and most important stories in the world, challenging governments and journalists alike. I’ve been writing extensively about the group since 2006, featured an exclusive interview in 2008 with founder Julian Assange and examined the myriad of issues around the website. Assange himself asked me in the early days whether I wanted to be on the group’s board to vet incoming leaks and determine their veracity before publishing. I agreed but unfortunately this never eventuated.
Frontline Club discussion this week over Wikileaks
Informative, provocative, important and necessary. Bravo:
Jonsdottir challenges typical Wikileaks myths
Icelandic Member of Parliament Birgitta Jonsdottir speaks on Canadian TV about Wikileaks and finding a space for secret, classified material. How many other Western politicians think like this?
No, Bibi, Iran only threatens your self-importance
Israel doesn’t really learn very well. After the outgoing Mossad chief said that Iran isn’t really a threat now or in the foreseeable future, here’s Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu saying the exact opposite. He’s best ignored. Better still, mocked: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told foreign journalists Tuesday that the American diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks…
Name how many barbaric ways the US lock people away?
The fear that Julian Assange, if sent to the US, may end up in Guantanamo Bay was raised by his lawyers yesterday. But in fact, argues this childish post in the Washington Post, the situation may be even more draconian (this is written in an oddly jovial style): Indeed, if Assange was convicted in U.S.…

Assange thanks Australians not clueless federal government
Presumably Assange isn’t thanking the supine Australian government, so desperate to please its American masters: Julian Assange has thanked Australia for its support of his – and Wikileaks – cause but called on Americans to tone down political rhetoric, saying those who incite violence should be charged with incitement to murder. Speaking to Fairfax in…
Assange hanging in Gitmo
Who would trust the Americans? Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, could be at “real risk” of the death penalty or detention in Guantánamo Bay if he is extradited to Sweden on accusations of rape and sexual assault, his lawyers claim. In a skeleton summary of their defence against attempts by the Swedish director of…
Wikileaks press release on incitement
Spot on (just released statement): “WikiLeaks: treat incitement seriously or expect more Gabrielle Gifford killing sprees.” Wikileaks today offered sympathy and condolences to the victims of the Tucson shooting together with best wishes for the recovery of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Giffords, a democrat from Arizona’s 8th district, was the target of a shooting spree…
